Tailor Made is a dive site you will not find in many of the guides you can find in print. It’s a hidden jewel and only recommended for more experienced divers. This is my favorite dive site to date on Bonaire. There are reason’s it’s not frequented by many divers. It’s located far north up past the refinery very close to the northern most tip of Bonaire. Not only is this such a great site to dive, it’s a fun drive to get there as well.
Getting to TailorMade
To get to Tailor Made you will head north to the refinery. Once you reach the refinery gates you will turn right. As you travel down the road for a good bit you will come to a fork in the road. To the right the dirt road continues and to the let the road looks like rock and crushed coral. You will take the left side of the fork. A little ways down this path it will split again, here you can take either side as it meets back up after going around some bushes. Just past here you will see rocks piled up and some tires stacked around some wood. It looks like the locals may burn fuel in the tires to mark the entrance for night dives. This is where you want to park.
Entering the water
To get to the water you will have to walk down a slightly slipper embankment of coral to get to the water so be care and choose your path carefully. Looking out you will notice the coral in the water is so overgrown that near the shoreline it breaks the surface of the water. There are a few areas where you can navigate through the coral to get out beyond it. There is a spot to the right and to the left of the stacked rocks. We choose the spot to the left. Whichever you choose make sure keep your head in the water and snorkel to see any smaller corals in your path. Be sure to take notice to the reef and corals as you descend and decide what you will look for when you return to exit.
Diving the site
Check the current it can me strong up this far north. Make sure you dive into the current so you can drift on your way back. When we dove it the current was going south, so we went north. The reefs are so amazing I was in awe of what I was seeing. I was so distracted by it’s beauty I hardly took any pictures. It is very clear that this site is only dove my a minority. The reefs were so immaculate and untouched. If you decide to dive this beautiful place try to stay at least 5ft or more off the reef to help keep it’s beauty for future generations of divers. Keep a lookout for Black Coral you should spot some between 60ft-80ft.
Exiting the water
When returning to the site timing is everything. Because you have to exit the water by navigating back through the coral that break the surface you don’t want to overshoot the exit. There was a pretty strong current when we dove the site and it didn’t take long at all to return. I would recommend if you are in a strong current and drifting back, do so at 15ft to do your safety stop on your ride back. Look for signs of coral that you recognize for your exit so you know where to turn in for your exit. You will need to surface to exit but make sure you complete your safety stop before you do.
